Blueberry do Baubles
Lisa, one of our incredible volunteers who has worn pretty much every hat possible - sewer, driver, logistics co-ordinator and everything in between - thought of creating a beautiful Christmas keepsake for our volunteers to treasure. She thought a Christmas decoration would be a very special way of remembering the extraordinary efforts of how our community pulled together during this time of need to support our frontline workers and vulnerable individuals across the city.
The Blueberry Academy have been so supportive of York Scrubs, and they displayed our bunting and posters in their shop to spread the word about what we have been doing.
The Blueberry Academy is an organisation that supports people with learning disabilities to promote employability and independence.
Blueberry arts and crafts co-operative have a workshop with a focus on upcycling, creating a wide range of products from keyrings to furniture which are then sold in the Blueberry Pop-up Shop, so they felt perfectly placed to help us create our special Christmas keepsakes.
All products sold in the shop are made or packaged by local disabled people, and they have a partnership with York Disabled Workers Co-operative and Brunswick Organic Nursery.
It has been a challenging year for the academy, staff have worked hard to keep trainees engaged throughout lockdown through online classes and hand delivered activity packs.
The last few weeks have been especially hard, closing their doors has meant they have missed out on a lot of their usual Christmas trade.
Angela from Blueberry Academy told us
‘Our workshop team were delighted to be asked by Lisa to make something for the York Scrubs volunteers. We worked together to come up with a plan, and we are really pleased with the beautiful baubles we have created with illustrations from Nutkin Avenue. Thank you for asking us to be involved.’
‘Being part of the wider community is really important to us, both to help our groups to learn about community involvement and to raise awareness of what we do.’
