Let Christmas day go with a whizz, pop and a bang (in a good way!) with these fabulous reusable crackers

 

Christmas Cracker: Instructions

For each cracker you will need:

  • Two pieces of fabric (one outer and one lining) measuring * 1/2” by 8 1/2” (21.5cm x 21.5cm) and another pair measuring 8 1/2” by 7 1/2” (21.5cm x 19cm)

  • 2 pieces of 2” (5cm) cotton webbing measuring 7 1/2” (19cm)

  • 2 pieces of 2” (5cm) cotton webbing measuring 6 1/2” (16.5cm)

  • Narrow velcro (1cm wide) or a popper or two

  • Ribbon (optional extra)

Step 1:

  • Apply the webbing to both lining pieces leaving a 1/2” (approx 1.2cm) seam allowance at the bottom of your fabric piece and at each side

  • Space the webbing 3” (7.5cm) apart. This should leave you with 1” (2.5cm) at the top of the fabric

  • Pin and sew along the side (shorter) edge of the webbing

Step 2:

  • Apply ribbons (optional) making sure you leave the bottom seam allowance free

  • Once completed the ribbon will sit over the stiffened part of the cracker

  • Sew in place

Step 3:

  • Sew the outer fabric and lining right sides together

  • Only sew round three sides leaving the top side open

  • Snip each corner

Step 4 (Version 1):

  • Turn inside out and fold the top edge inside to neaten. Press or pin to secure

  • Add either the hook or the soft part of the Velcro and sew to the inside (the lining side) of the larger piece of fabric. This will close the opening at the same time

  • Sew the corresponding piece of Velcro to the small piece making sure the Velcro is sewn to the outer fabric

Step 4 (Version 2):

  • Turn inside out and fold the top edge inside to neaten. Press or pin to secure

  • Sew the seam closed and add a popper or two instead

Step 5:

  • Roll to make a tube and hand sew

  • Tie with ribbons
