Cut out the pieces listed if you are not working from a York Scrubs bundle. Snip into all notches. If you are working from a pre-cut bundle, be sure to work out which is the top of your fabric.

Step 2

Sew the layers together a foot width or 5mm all the way around so that they become like whole pieces of fabric. Option 1: sew both layers of filter fabric to the patterned outer fabric; option 2: sew one of the filter layers to your lining instead, it will help you later if your lining is a slippery fabric. Then sew along the chin seam allowance (the bottom of your face covering), attaching the lining, right sides together. DO NOT PRESS / IRON at any stage if using York Scrubs filter material.

Step 3

After sewing that one seam turn it all the right way round encasing that one seam, then topstitch all around the outside through all the layers around a foot width away from the edge (the other three seams are left raw because these will eventually be bound with bias binding).

Step 4

Sew the bias binding onto the straight nose edge in two pieces (folding the underneath piece towards you to prevent fraying) this is so that the nose strip can be taken in and out for washing. Offset the join of the pieces to be about 4.5 cm from one edge, and sew a ‘stop’ through all layers of the binding at 4.5cm from the other edge, to prevent the nose wire from moving too far into the casing.

Step 5

With the patterned fabric facing up, fold three downwards pleats using the notches as the fold lines (1.5cm each) then topstitch either side to hold if all together.

Step 6

Making sure that the facial covering is central to the biased binding, enclose the edges into it, then continue stitching down the binding along all four ties, folding and enclosing the ends
